What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the practice of making a website easy for AI tools to reach, read and cite. Those tools include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. GEO means allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt, serving content as plain HTML, stating facts clearly with sources and dates, and describing who you are with structured data.
Where the term comes from
"Generative engine optimization" was introduced in a 2023 research paper by researchers from Princeton University and other institutions. They found that adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics made a page noticeably more likely to be used in AI-generated answers, while stuffing keywords did not help.
How AI tools find and use a page
- Reach: an AI crawler such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot fetches the page, if robots.txt and the site's firewall let it.
- Read: most AI crawlers read the raw HTML and do not run JavaScript, so text that only appears after scripts run is often invisible to them.
- Understand: structured data, clear headings and plain facts tell the tool what the page is about and who stands behind it.
- Cite: when the tool answers a question, it quotes and links the sources it trusts most for that question.
Google AI Overviews work differently: they draw on Google's normal search index, so the page must be indexed by Googlebot and eligible to show a snippet. Good SEO is the foundation of GEO.
GEO checklist
- Let AI crawlers in. Check robots.txt for rules that block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended, unless you block them on purpose. Use the AI crawler checker.
- Check the firewall too. Some hosts and CDNs refuse AI user agents even when robots.txt allows them.
- Serve real HTML. Make sure the main text is in the HTML the server sends, not only built by JavaScript.
- State facts plainly. Use numbers, dates, names and short definitions. Cite sources and link to them.
- Describe the entity. Add Organization and Person schema with sameAs links to your official profiles, and keep the name the same everywhere.
- Show freshness. Put a visible updated date on pages and in their schema.
- Add llms.txt. A short file at the root of the site that lists your most useful pages. See the llms.txt checker.
- Earn mentions. AI tools trust sites that other trusted sites mention and link to.
How Silkpath checks GEO
The GEO section of a Silkpath report checks AI crawler rules in robots.txt for ten AI agents, tests the site's firewall with an AI user agent, looks for llms.txt and llms-full.txt, Organization schema with sameAs, dates, citations and statistics, and flags pages whose content only appears with JavaScript. The AI Visibility section can ask Gemini, grounded in Google Search, whether your site is cited for the questions it should answer.
Questions and answers
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI tools still depend on pages being reachable, indexed and trusted, which is what SEO builds. GEO adds AI crawler access, plain HTML, clear facts and entity schema on top.
How do I get my website into Google AI Overviews?
Google says AI Overviews use its normal search index, so the page must be indexed and allowed to show snippets. Answer questions directly, keep facts and dates clear, and earn links from trusted sites.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove my site from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended controls whether content is used for Gemini models and grounding; AI Overviews in Search follow Googlebot. Blocking Google-Extended does not change how the site ranks in Search.
